APPEAL FROM DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST MOVEMENT (DSM), NIGERIA, OVER THE ARREST OF OUR MEMBERS

Two of our leading comrades at University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB), Ogun State, have been arrested and are being detained in police custody at state police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The names of the comrades are Oluremi Kehinde and Alexander Amaujor, the secretary and coordinator of the DSM UNAAB branch respectively.

Reasons for their arrest are as follows:

1. There was a press statement from the DSM UNAAB branch drawing the attention of the university authorities to the epileptic electricity supply in the school and
warning that if the problem is not addressed before the forthcoming examination, it could lead to mass failure of students.

2. There was another unsigned publication which was agitating for the reinstatement of the students' union Public Relations Officer (PRO) who was unjustly
expelled by the authorities and threatened that unless the PRO is reinstated, the forthcoming examination would be disrupted.

These comrades were invited by the university authorities for questioning only to be whisked away by the men of State Security Service (SSS) to the police station
for detention based on the allegation that they were responsible for the publications which they claim may threaten the peace on campus.

The DSM branch in the university took off only recently. But because of the impact which the comrades have started making within and outside the school, the
university authorities and the state are obviously become jittery. During the last May Day, the comrades sold 187 copies of our paper at the workers' rally in
Abeokuta.

We urge comrades internationally to call for their immediate release and an end to their victimisation. If the state thinks the comrades had committed any offence
then they should be charged to immediately.

Protest letters should be sent to:

(i) The Executive Governor
Government House,
Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta,
Ogun State, Nigeria.

(ii) The Commissioner of Police,
Nigeria Police,
Ogun State Command,
Eleweran, Abeokuta,

(iii) The Director,
State Security Service,
